A cardiologist you can trust with your heart

I am an Academic Consultant General and Interventional Cardiologist with over 13 years of experience at the Countess of Chester Hospital and Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital. I see private patients at Nuffield Health The Grosvenor Hospital, Chester โ€” serving patients across Chester, Liverpool, Wirral and the wider Merseyside region.

My training spans the prestigious Mersey Cardiology Programme, an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Alberta, Canada, and a research doctorate at Newcastle University. I hold an MA in Clinical Education from Edge Hill University and have completed the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford.

I am accredited in Cardiac CT by the British Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography, and I previously served as Clinical Director of Diagnostic and Clinical Services at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where I oversaw clinical operations across multiple specialties.

Alongside my clinical work, I serve as Year 2 Director of the MBChB Programme at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine, where I lead curriculum design, assessment and student wellbeing. I hold an Honorary Professorship at Chester Medical School, University of Chester.

Research & Publications

Research & Publications

Professor Kunadian's research career began in acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), culminating in an academic MD Degree from Newcastle University (2004โ€“2007). His thesis at James Cook University Hospital evaluated the reorganisation of myocardial infarction service delivery โ€” specifically the transition from thrombolysis-based care to a primary PCI service, including the final analysis of the landmark MERLIN randomised trial.

His scholarly output includes 29 peer-reviewed journal publications (17 as first author), 18 original articles, 5 reviews, 3 case reports, and a book chapter on adjunctive PCI technology in the second edition of Essential Interventional Cardiology. He contributed to the EACTS clinical guideline on antiplatelet and anticoagulation management in cardiac surgery (European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2008). He has reviewed over 60 manuscripts since 2007 for leading journals including Heart, Annals of Internal Medicine and European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

๐Ÿ† National Impact โ€” A UK-Wide Standard

Professor Kunadian's research group was the first in the UK to publish individual PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) operator outcomes โ€” a groundbreaking paper published in the BMJ (2008). Using cumulative funnel plots and statistical process control, this methodology has since been adopted across the entire UK by the British Cardiac Interventional Society (BCIS) for reporting individual cardiologist and hospital outcomes. His model is now a national standard used to assess performance across the NHS. He was also an invited expert presenter at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) Conference, Washington DC, USA (2007).

๐Ÿ”ฌ Ongoing Research โ€” Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital

Ongoing research at Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital focuses on quality outcome analysis in PCI through regular formal evaluations and collaborative meetings. Current research interests include service reconfiguration in acute cardiac care, risk stratification and operator performance outcomes, and application of statistical process control in clinical pathways.
